"We always try to have a bit of fun at work" - Rory Curran

Manchester Central's very own media maestro, Rory 'Raidraig' Curran, has 'Braved the Shave' to fundraise for Macmillan Cancer Support, already earning over £5,000 in donations for the charity. However, his simultaneous Movember campaign has left him looking somewhat like a young Dr. Phil! Here's Rory's story.

Rory was once well-known within the Manchester Football League as his luscious, long locks could be seen sporting a pair of headphones through which he would live-commentate over Manchester Central's fixtures. However, this is no more.

Not only has 'Raidraig' emigrated back to his natural habitat, the South, but he has also 'Braved the Shave', losing his iconic mop. In doing so, Rory has raised a massive £5,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support - just a modest 338% of his £1,500 goal - and that number is still counting.

After finishing his time at Manchester Metropolitan University, where Rory studied sports journalism and subsequently stumbled across his role at Manchester Central, 'Raidraig' returned to his hometown of Slough - although he has remained a freelance journalist for Manchester Central.

Suppose it's better than frosted tips...

Since returning to the scene of The Office in 2017, Rory and a group of comrades became the landlords one of Windsor's finest establishments and transformed into a pillar of the local community. Although, as The Corner House boasts an ever-changing array of drinks, with 34 different beers on draught at any one time, this pillar may be more like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

It was an impulsive trip to Plymouth, where the six co-owners were conducting market research by (literally) stumbling into rival taverns, that inspired the landlords to 'Brave the Shave'.

Having seen others already add hair to the sawdust-coated floor of a shoreline saloon, Rory and co. decided to undertake the ritual themselves.

Thus, they decided that October would be the perfect opportunity to shave their heads in order to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support - probably because they already knew that he would look silly with his Movember 'tache that he had already signed up to grow!

Rory had already signed up for Movember, a charity which raises awareness of men's issues - including mental health and suicide prevention as well as prostate and testicular cancer. If you are able, please donate to this cause and show your appreciation for the magnificent upper lipholstery that 'Raidraig' is sporting at the moment (and make the other five jealous as they can't grow one).

"A good laugh and a good cause" were the words of a glistening Rory Curran, as he (imaginatively) scratches his handlebar over the peanuts on the bar, "We are all good mates and we always try to have a bit of fun at work. After we had seen it in Plymouth, I suggested that we should do it next and everyone was up for it".

A good cause indeed. According to the NHS, 1 in 2 of us will develop a form of cancer in our lifetime, which is sadly why many of Rory and his colleagues have had cancer affect their lives in some way or another - as has the author of this article.

The shiny heads at the Corner House are now a bigger tourist attraction than Windsor Castle.

Macmillan is a charity which supports those living with cancer in the UK, healthcare professionals who care for cancer patients and those who are painfully left behind after cancer's effects on a loved one.

The charity uses funds generously donated by the public to offer a wide range of services, including supporting the mental, physical and financial health of those living with cancer, and also helps to reduce their stresses with services such as will-writing or cancer and drug education.

However, Macmillan is desperate for your help - as are the three million people in the UK who currently live with cancer. Please donate to Rory's Just Giving page if you can, and help to share this article far and wide.
