Manchester Central face Premier Division side Heyside in the Semi-Final of the Manchester Challenge Trophy on Saturday. Here are five key things you must know ahead of a massive clash.

Both Sides Seek Cup Glory in 2022/23

Both Manchester Central and Heyside have their sights set on a cup triumph in the 2022/23 season and know that just one more win takes them that ever step closer towards lifting the Manchester Challenge Trophy.

These sides are no strangers to cup triumphs, having a good history in cup competitions in recent memory. Heyside won the Manchester Challenge Trophy in the 19/20 season, whilst Central won both the Murray Trophy and the Terry Wood Cup in 2018.

The winner of this tie will face either Premier Division side Chadderton Reserves, or Lancashire Premier Division side Irlam Steel Rangers in the final and will come to expect a tough test no matter the outcome.

Central Survive Shootout to Reach Semi-Final

Central played with their heart on their sleeve in the Quarter Finals, coming back from behind to force the game into penalties. Amid a poor run of league form, Central secured a crucial 4-3 shootout win to see themselves through to the Semi Finals.

Goalkeeper Dan Whiting was the hero, saving the decisive penalty to send his side into raptures at Seashell Trust. Capping off a hard-fought victory, manager Chris Tomkinson could not have been prouder of his players and seeks to add another cup trophy to the collection for the club.

Heyside Impress in Cup Run

Despite heavily struggling in the Premier Division this season, Heyside have produced a cup run to be proud of up until this point. Starting with a damning 5-2 away win at Maine Road Reserves, Heyside began as they meant to go on.

Heyside followed that win up with an impressive 3-2 home win over Stretford Paddock in the Quarter Finals, and now look to knock of Manchester Central on Saturday to add to their string of tough victories in the Manchester Challenge Trophy.

Central carry woes defensively, Heyside lacklustre going forward

Chris Tomkinson must look for his side to sure up at the back heading into this fixture, having already conceded 23 goals in just ten league games so far this season. Struggling particularly away from home, it may prove to be a bad omen for Central on Saturday afternoon.

Heyside also come into this fixture with problems of their own, but at the other end of the pitch. Continuously lacklustre in front of goal, Heyside have only scored nine times in ten league fixtures.

Without an apparent goal threat, Heyside have yet to register anyone with over five goals this season but will look to James Horan, who has netted five in nine. Central will look to be solid on Saturday, perhaps seeking leadership from Quarter Final hero, Dan Whiting.

Heyside Struggle Massively in the Premier Division, Central Stagnant

An impressive cup run does not mask Heyside’s woes in the Premier Division this season, managing to pick up just one win in their ten games so far. They currently lie in the bottom three and face relegation as it stands.

Central, however, remain in a stalemate in Division One, still awaiting a first win since September, and have picked up only one point in their last four games in Division One football, although before abandonment, Central were three to the good in their last fixture against Bolton United, and may feel hard done by considering the scoreline at the break.

While struggling in their respective leagues, both sides have relied upon the cup for victories in recent games and will once again look for victory on Saturday when they meet in a huge Semi Final clash.
