Central’s latest Manchester Football League fixture against table-topping Bolton United was postponed at the opposition’s request as they suffered a bout of COVID-19 cases. The outbreak rendered Bolton unable to fulfil the necessary squad numbers for the fixture.
This was a shame for Central, who hoped to enter a purple patch of form after their convincing victory against Daisy Hill in the fixture prior as the team looks to push themselves into the promotion places.
Instead, Central now have no fixture for the second week running, disrupting the flow of the team’s performances. In the build-up to the postponed game, Chris Tomkinson viewed the fixture as an opportunity to “return the favour” following Bolton’s 4-2 win over Central earlier in the campaign. However, the squad have unfortunately been denied this opportunity.
Tomkinson stated he was relishing the fight against the league leaders, viewing the week break filling the Daisy Hill game as an opportunity to “rest, recover and prepare to overcome the challenge”. He was particularly excited following the previous match, quoted saying that it was the “best performance I have seen from this squad”.
The 2-1 win against Daisy Hill moved Manchester Central up one position in the league table into 8th place, just 6 points behind 5th place as Tomkinson’s side looks upwards towards promotion with ten games remaining. Goalkeeper Dan Whiting, stated that the team’s performance was “dominant from the first minute” and that it “gives the team a lot of confidence heading into the game against league-leaders Bolton United” - a belief that hopefully will not wane after two weeks with no football.
