Manchester Central have continued to enjoy success in cup competitions and have another opportunity to grab a piece of silverware before the season’s end.

Whatever may happen throughout the duration of a season for Manchester Central, the club have always had a knack to venture on deep cup runs. Their journey in the Manchester Challenge Trophy earlier on in the season came to a gut-wrenching end, as Central missed out narrowly on penalties.

The club have endured a difficult 2022/23 campaign, sitting mid table in eighth place in Division One of the Manchester Football League. Inconsistency has held Central back, once at the start of the season being grouped as a title challenger, before slipping down the order in the following months before the Winter break.

Despite struggles in the league, Central thrived in the Manchester Challenge Trophy that kick started back in October, where Central beat familiar opponents Avro Reserves 2-1 at Seashell Trust.

The question remains an interesting one, as to why Central thrive and rise to the occasion in the cup, but what is a guarantee is that the club have another opportunity to flourish in another cup competition, in one that they have lifted before.

Central take on Division Two side De La Salle on Saturday afternoon as they embark on another journey, this time in the Murray Trophy, a trophy which they managed to lift back in 2018, and it is a piece of silverware that Central will look to secure.

Gaffer Chris Tomkinson expressed how pleased he was with the performances from his side in recent weeks, not only in the rout at Altrincham Hale, but also in their scrappy 2-0 win at Seashell Trust the week prior.

Tomkinson in the post-match interview added they were “two very good, pleasing performances and definitely something to build on.” The boss also admitted his side were more “menacing” going forward at the weekend but was pleased to see that his players showed a variety in their performances.

Their hard-fought win over Boothstown a few weeks back now showed a side of Central we plainly have not seen this season, but the display has come at the perfect time. Central have proven they can stick it out when it gets tough, particularly in their route to the final of the Manchester Challenge Trophy.

The previously mentioned win over Avro was a gritty battle to kick start their cup run, whilst an enthralling but tight contest at Seashell Trust saw Central beat Premier Division side Heywood St James on penalties in the Quarter Final after a four-goal thriller.

Their opponents on Saturday will provide a stiff test, despite being in the division below, De La Salle are currently the leaders of the chasing pack for the promotion places in fourth and have shown an incredible nous for scoring goals, coming into the fixture as a real threat going forward.

Central’s recent improvement defensively is another timely introduction, with the recent arrivals Elvis Amoakwa and Adam Gunel providing more comfort and security to the rest of the team, whilst also bringing grit and spirit back to the side, which has been transparent in recent weeks.

It is sure to be another fascinating contest at the weekend, where we await to see whether Central can do it again in the cup. Having come so close to glory already this campaign, Central have another shot to go one step further.
