Despite another positive performance, and a goal from Martin, Manchester Central ultimately fell to another defeat in the Manchester Football League Division One as Avenue FC departed Seashell Trust with a 2-1 win.

Looking to instantly write off the poor league form of recent weeks, Central started brightly, looking to open the scoring in the early minutes. Claudio Costa saw the game's first opportunity in the 3rd minute as his long-distance curling effort coasted just over the bar.

Avenue's defence showed its solidity early on, with a second Costa shot blocked in the 4th minute, before a visiting defender once again obstructed a Central shot - this time from Dennis Raposo.

Nevertheless, the home side would continue to push on, perhaps spurred on by preventing themselves from falling behind in the first half - as they had to East Manchester FC the weekend previous.

Central's early efforts culminated to the home side seeing a penalty shout being waved away. Raposo rapidly broke forward, finding himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper as he attempted to latch onto a lofted through ball. However, the chance would go amiss after two collided on the edge of the box.

The early end-to-end nature of the game meant that Avenue ventured forwards on multiple occasions too. In fact, the visitors nearly netted the first of the fixture. After catching their striker in open space between Central's centre-backs, he attempted to lob Whiting, but the ball bobbled wide of the post.

However, it wouldn't be long until the scoring started, with Central opening their account in the 13th minute. The move originated in the middle of the park, before the ball was pushed out wide and the Whites progressed down the left wing via a tidy overlap. The ball soon found Raposo, whose squared pass across the box found Kaine Martin, who slid the ball past the 'keeper to notch his third in as many weeks.

Following falling behind, Avenue turned up the competitiveness of the game up an additional notch. This led to Claudio Costa being shown a yellow card in the 19th minute as he clumsily clattered a visitor to prevent a dangerous counterattack.

Just three minutes later, Avenue would strike back. The visitors were awarded a corner in the 22nd minute, which was promptly delivered into the box. After initially being cleared, another cross was fired across the bow, which Emmanuel Sholabi attempted to dispel. Unfortunately, the spin of the ball would take the ball over the head of an outstretched Whiting to equal the scores.

From this point onwards, both sides probed one another, searching for the lead prior to the break. Despite a flurry of opportunities, including a duo of brilliantly bending free-kicks from Junior Silva and Nell Noupoue which both nearly nestled themselves in the top-right corner of the netting, neither side found the second goal prior to the referee's whistle.

The second half started in much the same vein as the first ended, with both sides seeing dangerous opportunities go amiss. Just three minutes after the resumption of the game, Silva struck the post after cutting through the visitor's defence before darting inside the box. This gave confidence to Central, who began to control possession with short triangular passing moves looking to progress the ball forward.

The pace of the game began to slow around the hour-mark, as Avenue's relentless pressing stifled Central's choreographed attacking movements. However, despite the home side retaining control of the game, Avenue would take the lead against the grain of play, as their midfielder scored a fabulous long-range effort in the 65th minute.

A minute later, Tomkinson made four switches, bringing on Lawal, Wiwoloku, Kande and Bell, in an attempt to revitalise his eleven men. This led to Wiwoloku earning his side's best opportunity to equalise, as he was found one-on-one with the 'keeper on the 86th minute. However, the stopper was able to catch the bouncing ball before the striker could get his shot away.

Thus, despite the addition of new legs, and Central continuing to fight for their second, the home side were ultimately unable to surpass Avenue's defence, finishing the day pointless.
